Een tijdje runnerup achter Kate, daarna geduldig achter Anohni en dan helder en duidelijk heersend naar het eind van de editie.
Stevens had in 2003 het album Michigan uitgebracht en daarbij gewag gemaakt van het 50-state project.
Illinois als volgende staat was voor hem een relatief kleine en logische stap omdat hij de staat goed kende, waardeerde en zag als zwaartepunt in de 'Midwest'.
Ter voorbereiding las hij werk van lokale auteurs als Saul Bellow en Carl Sandburg, reisde rond en verdiepte zich in de geschiedenis.
Zoals hij gewend was maakte hij opnames ter plaatse, als bij een enkele gastartiest thuis, of een studio daar dicht bij en in een kerk, de St. Paul's in Brooklyn. Het meeste echter is vastgelegd bij hem thuis in zijn Brooklyn appartement en in The Buddy Project studio in Astoria, Queens.
Hij werkte alleen aan het project, liet materiaal 'rijpen' en dacht niet aan publiek of het live performen van het spul.
De muziek is lo-fi opgenomen, met een eenvoudige 8-track en niet-dure microfoons. Met Pro Tools werd het geheel gemixt en geproduceerd. Er was veel materiaal, een dubbelalbum wilde hij niet - dat achtte hij in dit stadium van zijn carrière 'arrogant'. Dat restmateriaal werd dus later uitgebracht als The Avalanche: Outtakes and Extras from the Illinois Album.
Erg mooie plaat. Fijne ingetogen artiest.

En natuurlijk wist iedereen Illinois op de kaart aan te wijzen. Dank aan Johnny voor die ene extra 100% hit, want anders had ik over twee weken vanaf een rots in de Atlantische Oceaan tussen de schapen de voorspelling moeten begeleiden. Eigenlijk ben ik nog nooit zo dicht bij de overwinning geweest. Bright Eyes had ik voorspeld op nummer 10. Werd uiteindelijk nummer 11.

Sterke plaat. Deze had ook in mijn lijstje kunnen staan. Eigenlijk was 2005 een gemakkelijk jaar om een top 20 te maken want die bestaat uit enkel 4,5 + 5 * albums en dan heb ik nog 90 albums met 4* waar deze Paavoharju ook tussen zit.
Dit zijn de top jaren. veel goede muziek en (had toen) ook veel tijd om te luisteren.
2006 is ook weer een Superfantastic jaar.
