Annie houdt nog even vol, maar er is nu toch wel wat concurrentie in aantocht. Moloko en Mirwais stijgen rap omhoog. Ook een nieuwe binnenkomer die wel eens heel ver zou kunnen komen: Aaliyah's Try Again. Een van haar beste singles mede dankzij de geweldige productie van Timbaland.
Ook leuk is Console's 14 Zero Zero, destijds volgens mij opgepikt via een Chupa Chups-reclame, maar nog meer fan geworden door een heel leuk optreden bij VPRO's Club Lek, een radioprogramma dat je elke woensdagavond kon bijkomen. Dat was als ik me goed herinner in een studio op het Rembrandtplein en later meer richting Waterlooplein (daar zag ik Console). Leuke café-setting en drie uur live radio met in elk uur een artiest te gast die dan ook drie, vier nummers live liet horen. Console was een van de leukste optredens die ik me herinner. Console komt verder uit de Münchenser scene rondom The Notwist, indertijd een mooi broeinest van spannende elektronica/indierock/etc.
Heel wat minder spannend is Muse, maar in deze tijd maakten ze nog wel toffe singles. In mijn omgeving waren mensen sowieso wel echt enthousiast, helaas verzopen ze later in pretenties.
Radio 4 ken ik vooral van Dance to the Underground, een single die volgend jaar uitkomt en een van de beste is uit de postpunk-revivalscene uit die tijd. Deze is nog lang niet zo goed, maar wel een fijn update van het scherpe Gang of Four geluid van grofweg 20 jaar ervoor.

Net nu ik een hele aardige single van Luna Sea heb gevonden, stopt de Japanse band er mee, na hun laatste album Lunacy. Opgericht in 1989. Vooral en uiteindelijk dus een band van de jaren '90. Hadden van mij nog wel een tijdje meegekund.
De Super Fury Animals brengen ook een aardige single maar het venijn zit in de staart, bij Embrace. Het lijkt zo gewoontjes te beginnen maar uiteindelijk brengt de bijna zes minuten durende single naar een alleraardigste finale.

Na twee weken weer terug met een nieuwe lijst, compleet met besprekingen van de binnenkomers. En ze zijn weer erg divers.
De hoogste is voor Embrace, met You're not alone, een echt feelgood nummer met opgewekte blazers en een bemoedigende tekst. Het is wel spijtig dat de band steeds minder succes had, maar zo gaan die dingen.
De tweede nieuwe is wel een klassieker geworden, al leek hij uit de lucht te vallen: Freestyler van het Finse breakbeatcollectief Bomfunk MC's. Het aanstekelijke liedje sprak zowel de alternatieve liefhebber als de meer mainstream luisteraars aan, en werd onder andere in Nederland een nummer 1-hit. Hierna nam het succes snel af; na nog 1 opvolghit werd het weer vrij stil voor de band.
Het Nederlandse Nilsson komt na twee jaar terug met een nieuwe single Stars. De song rockt wat meer, klinkt wat meer afgewogen maar mist daardoor wat originaliteit die de band voorheen had. Verder dan wat radioplays kwam het ook niet meer.
De vierde nieuwe is voor de Puerto Ricaanse zanger Ricky Martin, en hoewel hij al veel hits heeft gescoord, is dit zijn eerste (en laatste) notering in mijn top 40. Het klinkt ook direct anders dan zijn bekende feesthits; Private emotion is een ballad, meeslepend, met mede-zang van Meja. In de NL top 40 kwam hij maar tot 29, bij mij gaat hij zelfs mijn top 10 halen.
De laatste entry is voor de Rollins Band (voorheen Henry Rollins Band) met Illumination. Zo'n zes jaar na zijn bekende single Liar heeft Henry Rollins zijn sound wel wat gemoderniseerd, al komen de rocksounds in de coupletten wel duidelijk naar voren. De clip toont beelden van een trip naar India. Wat hij zeggen wil, is mij niet duidelijk maar boos is hij natuurlijk wel.

Na twee weken weer terug met een nieuwe lijst, compleet met besprekingen van de binnenkomers. En ze zijn weer erg divers.
De hoogste is voor Embrace, met You're not alone, een echt feelgood nummer met opgewekte blazers en een bemoedigende tekst. Het is wel spijtig dat de band steeds minder succes had, maar zo gaan die dingen.
De tweede nieuwe is wel een klassieker geworden, al leek hij uit de lucht te vallen: Freestyler van het Finse breakbeatcollectief Bomfunk MC's. Het aanstekelijke liedje sprak zowel de alternatieve liefhebber als de meer mainstream luisteraars aan, en werd onder andere in Nederland een nummer 1-hit. Hierna nam het succes snel af; na nog 1 opvolghit werd het weer vrij stil voor de band.
Het Nederlandse Nilsson komt na twee jaar terug met een nieuwe single Stars. De song rockt wat meer, klinkt wat meer afgewogen maar mist daardoor wat originaliteit die de band voorheen had. Verder dan wat radioplays kwam het ook niet meer.
De vierde nieuwe is voor de Puerto Ricaanse zanger Ricky Martin, en hoewel hij al veel hits heeft gescoord, is dit zijn eerste (en laatste) notering in mijn top 40. Het klinkt ook direct anders dan zijn bekende feesthits; Private emotion is een ballad, meeslepend, met mede-zang van Meja. In de NL top 40 kwam hij maar tot 29, bij mij gaat hij zelfs mijn top 10 halen.
De laatste entry is voor de Rollins Band (voorheen Henry Rollins Band) met Illumination. Zo'n zes jaar na zijn bekende single Liar heeft Henry Rollins zijn sound wel wat gemoderniseerd, al komen de rocksounds in de coupletten wel duidelijk naar voren. De clip toont beelden van een trip naar India. Wat hij zeggen wil, is mij niet duidelijk maar boos is hij natuurlijk wel.

Flink wat verversing in de lijst. De nummers die uit de lijst vallen stonden samen ruim 60 weken genoteerd, dus de lijst wordt minimaal 20 weken jonger. Out of Control valt na 25 weken uit de lijst en is (na Unfinished Sympathy) de 2e grootste hit uit de jaren '90 geworden. Altijd een geweldige plaat gevonden die ook wat ondergewaardeerd werd, maar dat heb ik nu dan een beetje recht kunnen zetten.
De hoogste nieuwe binnenkomer is de nieuwe Laurent Garnier: The Man With The Red Face. Geweldig nummer met die saxofoon. Mijn beste herinnering aan is het kerstfeest van een bedrijf waar ik destijds net werkte. Altijd een beetje afwachten hoe iedereen zich gedraagt, maar de sfeer was behoorlijk uitgelaten en de locatie (bovenin het strijkijzer in Den Haag, met uitzicht over de hele stad) fantastisch. Toen de DJ dit nummer draaide, ging het dak er wel een beetje vanaf.
De 12" van Sigur Rós' Ný Batteri koester ik, inclusief de andere tracks is dat een van de beste stukken muziek die ze hebben uitgebracht. En ik bewaar ook goede herinneringen aan het festival Crossing Border, waar ik ze voor het eerst zag in de oude zaal van de Melkweg. Bedenk me nu dat ik vlak voor Sigur Rós ook nog een stukje Coldplay zag, die toen in de andere zaal van de Melkweg speelden. Was niet zo'n fan, nooit echt geweest ook, maar Shiver is wel een mooi nummer. Wel bizar in hoeverre Chris Martin hier zingt als Jeff Buckley. Andere toonhoogte, maar verder behoorlijk vergelijkbaar in stemgebruik.
Grofweg een maand later zag ik Richard Ashcroft in Paradiso. Dat was om persoonlijke redenen echt een slechte avond, was met mijn hoofd ook niet echt bij het concert. Daarna heb ik het nummer nauwelijks nog gedraaid, dus het voelt nog steeds wat ongemakkelijk als ik het luister. Maar het is te goed om te negeren.
De singles van 16 Horsepower is ook nog prachtig, die van Lighting Seeds en Gorky's Zygotic Mynci zijn tof, maar halen het niet bij eerder werk.

Flink wat verversing in de lijst. De nummers die uit de lijst vallen stonden samen ruim 60 weken genoteerd, dus de lijst wordt minimaal 20 weken jonger. Out of Control valt na 25 weken uit de lijst en is (na Unfinished Sympathy) de 2e grootste hit uit de jaren '90 geworden. Altijd een geweldige plaat gevonden die ook wat ondergewaardeerd werd, maar dat heb ik nu dan een beetje recht kunnen zetten.
De hoogste nieuwe binnenkomer is de nieuwe Laurent Garnier: The Man With The Red Face. Geweldig nummer met die saxofoon. Mijn beste herinnering aan is het kerstfeest van een bedrijf waar ik destijds net werkte. Altijd een beetje afwachten hoe iedereen zich gedraagt, maar de sfeer was behoorlijk uitgelaten en de locatie (bovenin het strijkijzer in Den Haag, met uitzicht over de hele stad) fantastisch. Toen de DJ dit nummer draaide, ging het dak er wel een beetje vanaf.
De 12" van Sigur Rós' Ný Batteri koester ik, inclusief de andere tracks is dat een van de beste stukken muziek die ze hebben uitgebracht. En ik bewaar ook goede herinneringen aan het festival Crossing Border, waar ik ze voor het eerst zag in de oude zaal van de Melkweg. Bedenk me nu dat ik vlak voor Sigur Rós ook nog een stukje Coldplay zag, die toen in de andere zaal van de Melkweg speelden. Was niet zo'n fan, nooit echt geweest ook, maar Shiver is wel een mooi nummer. Wel bizar in hoeverre Chris Martin hier zingt als Jeff Buckley. Andere toonhoogte, maar verder behoorlijk vergelijkbaar in stemgebruik.
Grofweg een maand later zag ik Richard Ashcroft in Paradiso. Dat was om persoonlijke redenen echt een slechte avond, was met mijn hoofd ook niet echt bij het concert. Daarna heb ik het nummer nauwelijks nog gedraaid, dus het voelt nog steeds wat ongemakkelijk als ik het luister. Maar het is te goed om te negeren.
De singles van 16 Horsepower is ook nog prachtig, die van Lighting Seeds en Gorky's Zygotic Mynci zijn tof, maar halen het niet bij eerder werk.

Vijf nieuwe songs, en de hoogste is op 29 The Chemical Brothers met Music: response. In twee woorden wordt kernachtig samengevat wat muziek (met name dansmuziek) kan doen met de mens. Het is natuurlijk weer geschikt om op te dansen, maar de beats zijn niet al te heftig. En in de manier waarop het nummer grotendeels instrumentaal is en de vocalen elektronisch bewerkt zijn (niet veel meer dan de titel) meen ik invloed van Kraftwerk te herkennen.
Op Fast and far away laat Velvet Belly (na Easy) een heel ander geluid horen: een lieflijke ballad met mooie zanglijnen en zachte instrumentatie. Helaas deed het niet meer zoveel.
Op 32 het eerste levensteken bij mij van de Amerikaanse nu-metalband Slipknot. De band staat (of stond) erom bekend dat de leden altijd gemaskerd optraden en ook heel lang de identiteiten van de leden geheim hielden. Ook klinken ze wel wat agressiever dan hun genregenoten, maar Wait and bleed heeft ook een grote catchiness, waardoor het toch goed scoorde (in NL echter nog geen tipparade). Achteraf mag je dit wel een klassieker noemen; de overrompelende energie hebben ze niet meer kunnen overtreffen.
Patti Smith gaat nu al zo'n 50 jaar mee en in 2000 was ze dus (getalsmatig) halverwege haar carrière. Met Glitter in their eyes maakt ze een degelijke rocksong met een niet al te scherp randje, maar wel vlot klinkend.
Nog zeer bescheiden komt Moloko op 38 binnen met The time is now. Sing it back deed bij mij niet zo veel, maar deze opvallend akoestische maar zeer dansbare song gaat het goed doen. De violen geven een discosound, maar de gitaar geeft het juist warmte, en met de stem van Roisin Murphy wordt dit een geslaagd geheel.
