Eindelijk, na 6 weken duikelt Muse van de nummer 1 af en is Artful Dodger de nieuwe nummer 1. Best bijzonder, aangezien in de loop der jaren steeds minder vaak non-rock (ofwel dance) songs de bovenste plek bereiken.

De hoogste nieuwe is voor de tweede entry van Blink 182, een punkpopbandje dat in de slipstream van The Offspring en Green Day ook aan het succes mocht proeven. En met All the small things is dat helemaal terecht: wat een ontzettend vlot pakkend liedje, een grappige niets serieus nemende clip en een ironische tekst. Hoewel een klassieker, strandde het liedje op 21 in de NL top 40.

Op 32 komt het Franse Air binnen met het eerste nieuwe geluid na het succesvolle album Moon Safari. Playground love is een sfeervolle wat broeierige track, met een grote rol voor de saxofoon, en wat conventioneler van compositie. De song is afkomstig van de soundtrack voor The Virgin Suicides (geheel door Air verzorgd) en bracht de band weer terug op de radio, al was het succes wel minder dan voorheen.

The Cure vertoonde al jaren een neergaande lijn, qua noteringen in mijn lijst in ieder geval. Maybe someday is de voorlaatste notering tot aan de wonderbaarlijke heropstanding vorig jaar. Het geluid is vintage Cure, niet slecht maar ook niet opzienbarend.

De laatste nieuwe is voor de tweede notering van Marcy Playground (en laatste). Bye bye is een vrolijke rocksong, weinig mis mee maar misschien ook te weinig onderscheidend.

nieuw:
Broadcast's Echo's Answer valt uit de lijst, maar de opvolger dendert alweer binnen. Een heel andere sfeer wordt hier opgetrokken, na het minimale EA is Papercuts ineens behoorlijk overdonderend. Echt een schitterend nummer wat mij betreft, waarin moderne electronica en analoge synthesizers worden vermengd met jaren '60 filmmuziek.

Legowelt knalt ook binnen. Heb hem iets later ontdekt via een verzamelaar, maar zijn eerste breder opgepakte release stamt uit deze tijd (sommige bronnen geven zelfs al eind 1999 aan). Nog ouder werk van de Haagse elektroproducer is er ook, maar dat heb ik nooit gehoord. Met Sturmvogel is hij in ieder geval meteen op topniveau.

Chemical Brothers' Music: Response staat me niet meer echt bij als single. Voor mij is het ook vooral geschikt als albumopener, los werkt het vooralsnog minder voor mij. Nu is dat relatief, want ze hebben de lat ook wel erg hoog gelegd met de vorige singles.

Space Brothers' Shine zit meer in de trancehoek. Het nummer stamt al uit 1997, maar is via een remix aan een nieuw leven begonnen.

Het tijdperk Coldplay is nu echt begonnen met de eerste single van het debuutalbum Parachutes.
We kunnen onze lol op, voorlopig volgen er de komende jaren meerdere singles per jaar uit: ze worden een vaste aanwezigheid in de lijsten. Voor wie er van houdt en het wordt natuurlijk steeds minder en ook bekritiseerd. Maar die eerste jaren viel dat allemaal nog mee.

Vrolijkheid bij Toploader en zowaar een Phil Collins single die overduidelijk aan de zanger is toe te schrijven. Nog van de film Tarzan.
Semisonic heeft een prima rocksingle, nogal een beetje een onderschatte band. Geneva zorgt voor de nodige rust in de lijst, vooral na het grunten/zang met bijpassende muziek op de nieuwe single van Slipknot.

De hoogste is deze week voor Novastar, die opnieuw een heel fijn liedje uit zijn mouw schudt, The best is yet to come, ook een mooi motto natuurlijk. Vreemd genoeg bereikt deze sterke radiohit niet eens de NL tipparade, en dat gaat Novastar ook nooit meer lukken, ondanks dat het een blijvende naam is geworden.

Daarna komt Madonna binnen met een opvallende cover van Don McLean's American pie uit 1972. Opvallend, omdat de song een erg lange tekst heeft, wat niet erg bij Madonna's stijl past, maar de productie is inventief genoeg met sterke synth-motieven, en ook de clip weet de aandacht redelijk vast te houden. Een commercieel succes was het zeker wel, en ook bij mij scoort het behoorlijk. En nog opmerkelijker: het is haar laatste entry in mijn top 40, ever...

Op 32 komt het Schotse Travis binnen met Driftwood. Het is typisch de sound van deze band, niet opvallend maar wel prettig in het gehoor liggend.

Moby scoort opnieuw op 33 met een song waarvan de vocalen zijn gesampled van een track uit 1937, van Vera Hall. Met een strakke ritmetrack klinkt het toch ook weer eigentijds. Hiermee scoort Moby een kleine top 40 hit, wat ik wel opmerkelijk vind omdat Why does my heart feel so bad de top 40 niet haalde (en die lijkt mij toch veel bekender en sterker).

De laagste nieuwe (en dat is op zich al opmerkelijk voor zo'n goed scorende band) is voor de Smashing Pumpkins, Stand inside your love (terwijl de vorige single nog op 38 genoteerd staat). Ook hier is het weer typisch het band-geluid, met gruizige gitaren in het refrein en overal de wat snerpende stem van Billy Corgan. Een klassieker in het genre is het niet geworden.

nieuw:
- Mirwais (Ahmadzaï) was destijds wel een favoriet met een paar heerlijke singles die ik nog jaren zou blijven draaien, waaronder dit Disco Science met fijne Breeders-sample. Hij draaide al even mee in de muziek, begin jaren '80 was hij in thuisland Frankrijk al een bekend gezicht via de synthpop/wave-band Taxi Girl. Op basis van zijn huidige succes zou Madonna hem aan de haak slaan als producer voor haar aankomende Music-album. Madonna zelf komt ook nog binnen met American Pie, een beetje op het nippertje. Leuk nummer, destijds 10.000 keer voorbij zien komen op MTV, maar nooit echt helemaal wild van geweest.

- Smashing Pumpkins' Machina heb ik al heel land niet meer gedraaid, afgaande op last.fm maar 1 keer in de afgelopen 20 jaar (in 2011). Maar misschien moet ik het weer eens opzetten, want na al die jaren bevallen de singles me uitstekend. The Everlasting Gaze zit nog steeds in de lift en dan is daar de volgende single alweer. Deze keer wat rustiger, maar zeker zo meeslepend.

- Beck vond ik destijds leuker dan nu denk ik, zeker zijn disco-fase t.t.v. Midnite Vultures. Mixed Bizness vind ik wel een stuk leuker dan het wat flauwe Sexx Laws, maar het niveau van mn. de Odelay-singles wordt toch niet meer gehaald.

- Fiona Apple en Everything But The Girl zijn voor mij 2 bekende namen die scoren met 2 singles die ik pas de laatste tijd heb leren kennen. De eerste heeft weer een iets traditioneler geluid na het opzwepende Fast As You Can en de tweede vervolgt hun weg in house-territoria.

- The Amazing had ik werkelijk nog nooit van gehoord, maar dit Qu'est-ce Que Vous Voulez lijkt me een beetje geïnspireerd op de sound van Daft Punk's Homework. Stevige Franse house, maar dan uit België. Daar werd dit dan ook een heel klein hitje (1 week in de Ultratop 50 later deze maand), maar verder redelijk onder de radar gebleven.
