Dit kleine meisje van Gary US Bonds komt deze week binnen op 12. In mei 1961 haalde hij met Quarter to Three drie weken de tweede plaats in mijn hitparade. Hij werd van de eerste plek afgehouden door Ben E. King met Stand by me en Sam Cooke met Cupid. Eigenlijk moet ik die lijstjes herzien want hij verdiende destijds zeker minstens 1 week de eerste plek. Misschien dat het de komende weken met zijn nieuwste single alsnog gaat lukken. Deze Bruce Springsteen compositie gaat het in ieder geval bij mij iets beter doen dan die andere die volgende week binnen gaat komen.

Hoogste nieuwe binnenkomer is voor The Human League, die met The Sound of the Crowd een flinke stap voorwaarts maken richting het geluid van Dare. Ik betwijfel of ik de single-versie ooit eerder had gehoord, maar hij viel eigenlijk meteen in de smaak. Iets donkerder en minder gepolijst dan de remix op Dare, maar ook erg goed.

De Duitse versie van Pocket Calculator kwam volgens 45cat al in maart uit - met de Japanse vertaling Dentaku op de b-kant. De Engelstalige versie komt later in april. Tegen die tijd maar even kijken welke versie ik in mijn lijst zet, voorlopig in ieder geval leuk deze versie een paar keer te draaien. "Ich addiere / und subtrahiere / kontrolliere / und komponiere".

Kano is er eentje voor de liefhebbers van Change en Chic denk ik. Mooie mix van italo-disco en funk. Op de drums trouwens Tullio De Piscopo, die we in 1984 terug gaan horen met het geweldige Stop Bajon.

Een van mijn eerste bandjes/muzikale aankopen was er een met 'Synthesizers Greatest Hits', dat ik eind '80's meenam van een rommelmarkt. De muziek erop was in het genre van 'Chariots of Fire', maar dan vaak wat kitscheriger. Aan Chariots of Fire heb ik verder nooit meer aandacht besteed, maar nu ik het weer hoor vind ik het toch wel goed. Misschien dat ik de film ook maar eens moet gaan zien.

Van The Clash zie ik hier Guns of Brixton opduiken. Die gaat bij mij ongetwijfeld volgende week binnenkomen, voor deze week kwam ik er niet meer aan toe hem te beluisteren al kan ik het nummer wel dromen. Ik had nog wel een andere Clash-single bij mijn tips staan. Police On My Back kwam alleen uit in Australië en dat voelt niet onlogisch. Het is de minste Sandinista!-single tot nu toe. Maar toch wel net top40-materiaal hier.

The Donkeys is duidelijk 'mod'. Het had net zo goed een nummer van The Jam kunnen zijn, opgenomen tijdens een snipperdag van Paul Weller. Lekkere plaat.

Van Split Enz vind ik History Never Repeating steeds leuker worden. Dit nummer is wel deels een herhalingsoefening (ondanks de titel), meldt Wikipedia: "The guitar bridge in this song, played by Neil Finn, was originally featured in an old Phil Judd song, "Bergen Aan Zee". The band only played the latter song live." Geen idee hoe ze bij 'Bergen aan Zee' uitkwamen, maar ik vind het wel leuk aangezien ik goede herinneringen heb aan het Noord-Hollandse plaatsje.

En uiteindelijk hebben we toch nog maar liefst vijf nieuwe binnenkomers.

Ik moet inzake voorspellingen eigenlijk altijd wat meer ruimte houden voor toekomstige winst van artiesten. Dat wil zeggen, er zijn met sommige nummers altijd topic-leden (waaronder ikzelf) die wel eens wat minder hard met tracks omhoog in hun lijst gaan.

Dat remt een snelle progressie af. Dat betekent dat het aanvankelijk goed gaat met een song, er even een pas op de plaats wordt gemaakt en dán komen er nog twee of drie users met een voorzichtige klim naar boven met datzelfde nummer.
Dat is het moment dat het nummer winst gaat maken. Hoe meer users er op stemmen, hoe meer punten ook.
En daarom duurde het een week extra met zowel Love games van Level 42 als Bette Davis Eyes van Kim Carnes. Dan is gelijk ook het einde van het succes nog niet in zicht.

Het hoesje van Vangelis is de Nederlandse; streng werd nog meegedeeld dat het nummer pas op 24 april 1982 in de Nederlandse Top 40 is binnengekomen (de statistieken liegen niet) maar ik vind de hoes best mooi. Volgens 45cat.com verscheen het nummer toch al op 16 mei 1981. Wat er in het tussenliggende jaar mee is gebeurd is niet helemaal duidelijk.
Ik zal het de geschiedenis vergeven.

En dan gaan we richting het songfestival 1981 en dus komt Bucks Fizz om de hoek kijken. Vermoedelijk niet ten onrechte, de Engelse band heeft de editie van dat jaar gewonnen. Ik schat niet in dat ik nog keek, maar ik ben nog wel even de lijst met 20 deelnemers (wat een eenvoud!) doorgelopen. Engeland 1, Duitsland 2, Frankrijk 3. Zo kennen we het festival weer.

Maar ik ken er echt helemaal niemand van, behalve dan Bucks Fizz. Voor Nederland deed Linda Williams (9e) mee. Zegt me ook niets. Vermoedelijk zullen de ware kenners mij om de oren slaan. Maar potten hebben de deelnemers in de Nederlandse hitlijsten nooit gebroken.

B-Movie, Altered Images en Heatwave draaien al weer een paar weken mee maar weten u uiteindelijk toch de lijst te bereiken. In totaal deden er bij de uitverkiezing van de beste twintig 122 nummers mee.

Ja, kennelijk heeft dat nummer er erg lang over gedaan om een hit te worden. De film en de soundtrack verschenen al in het voorjaar van 1981, en volgens Wikipedia verscheen de titelnummer* in het Verenigd Koninkrijk al in mei 1981 op single. In de VS gebeurde dat pas in december van dat jaar, zoals dat wel vaker gaat met Europese, en vooral non-angelsaksische artiesten. Dan zitten er soms maanden tussen, omdat de platenbazen in de VS eerst overtuigd moeten worden van de eventuele hitpotentie. Dat Vangelis een Griek was - een land dat niet bepaald grossiert in overzeese hitsuccessen - zal wellicht ook een rol hebben gespeeld.

In de VS liep het trouwens gesmeerd voor deze instrumental. Het nummer begon in december (binnen op #94) aan een langzame, maar gestage opmars in de Billboard Hot 100. Uiteindelijk haalde het in mei 1982 één week de nummer 1-positie, wat destijds vrij uitzonderlijk was voor een instrumentale compositie. En zeker als die door een Griekse meneer geschreven werd. Vangelis is - het zal niemand verbazen - dan ook de enige Griek die een Amerikaanse nummer 1-notering op zijn naam wist te brengen. Rond die tijd begon het nummer ook elders te lopen, wat ook het Nederlandse hitsucces rond diezelfde tijd verklaart. Bij ons kwam het tot nummer 12, net als een paar maanden eerder in Engeland.

* Nou ja, titelnummer? Op het album was het nummer gelabeld als 'Titles', ongetwijfeld refererend aan de functie die het nummer in de film heeft. Maar ze waren wel zo slim om de single te koppelen aan het succes van de filnm en het dus te hertitelen. En dus werd het bekend als Chariots of fire. Terecht ook, want het is het thema van de gelijknamige film en het 'centerpiece' van de soundtrack.

Saillant detail: landgenoot Demis Roussos, die ooit samen met Evangelis Papathanassiou deel uitmaakte van Aphrodites Child, bracht onder de naam Race to the end al in maart 1981 - dus nog vóórdat Vangelis' versie in de UK op single was verschenen - een vocale versie van het nummer uit, zonder veel succes. Hij zong over de originele muziek van Vangelis heen, zodat het opnieuw een soort samenwerking was. De tekst van dat nummer werd geschreven door niemand minder dan Jon Anderson.
Chariots of fire zou later nog door veel anderen worden opgenomen, zowel vocaal als instrumentaal.

Voor de puristen onder ons een nieuwe teleurstelling: ja, I won't let you down van Ph.D. is inderdaad al veel ouder dan begin '82, toen het een hit werd in Nederland. Een grote hit ook, daar valt niets van te zeggen.
Maar het origineel verscheen in Engeland al in april 1981. Het werd toen geen hit, dat volgde ook pas later.
Ik las overigens dat zanger Jim Diamond, die later nog een grote solo hit scoorde met I should have known better, al is overleden in 2015. Tien jaar terug.

The Human League slaat toe met een nummer van het album Dare, een volgend voorbeeld. Wij kennen de band in Nederland pas ook sinds begin 1982, toen met Don't you want me. The Sound of the Crowd is nooit in Nederland te koop geweest.
Er volgen vier hits van de Human League in 1981 (releasedata van de UK) van Dare. En wij wisten het niet.

It's going to happen van The Undertones is een persoonlijke favoriet maar dat geldt ook voor Rupert Holmes. Adventure is misschien onbekend maar Holmes blijft fantastische hits schrijven. Dat geldt ook voor de meester J.J. Cale. Madness heeft een nieuwe hit en Kraftwerk geef ik een kans uit de lijst van herman

week 16 voor 1981, het jaar is nauwelijks een kwart voorbij en alle ex- 'Crucial Three' leden zijn al langs geweest. Pete Wylie begon dit jaar als Wah! op 1, Julian Cope kwam met z'n Teardrop EXplodes in de top 10 en nu komt ook Ian McCullough met z'n Echo & the Bunnymen binnen. Ik heb wel het idee dat het succes steeds iets minder wordt, tijd voor een nieuwe Wylie (maar dat duurt nog even). Vijf nieuwe in totaal, Bauhaus en Echo uit de UK charts, Rick Springfield uit de US charts en Sugar & The Lollipops uit de tipparade, hun 2e al dit jaar. Dan ook nog The Cure die al in de UK charts staat en ook bijna de tipparade bereikt. Ik wist nooit dat dit een single was; Faith is wel m'n op een na favoriete album van hun, heerlijk nummer ook met 2 bassen en geen gitaar blijkbaar.
Maar Bauhaus toch hoogst. Toen ik begin 90s in de alternatieve muziek verzeild raakte via sinic youth pixies maar ook bv joy division kocht ik ook een cd van bauhaus maar dat koste nog wel wat tijd om aan te wennen. Dat is helemaal goed gekomen, heb ze nog een keer live gezien een jaar of 20 geleden in Tivoli oudegracht.

Een verklarend feit dat ik nog niet bij de verschillende stukjes over Chariots of fire heb gelezen, waarom het een jaar duurde voordat het in de meeste landen een succes werd, is simpelweg dat het album in maart 1982 de Oscar won voor beste filmsoundtrack. Dit gaf zoveel nieuwe publiciteit dat de single werd (her)uitgebracht en eindelijk de Nederlandse (en andere) hitparade(s) haalde. De Oscar zorgde voor de doorbraak.

En dan nog een laatste (?) detail over Chariots of fire: de titel van film, album en single is ontleend aan een gedicht van de Engelsman William Blake (1804), een eeuw later op muziek gezet door Charles Parry en inmiddels een soort tweede Brits volkslied, dat altijd in de finale van Last Night of the Proms massaal gezongen wordt. Dit Jerusalem staat ook op het album Chariots of fire, en is daar wonderbaarlijk aaneengesmeed met het voorafgaande 100 metres, en wel zo, dat tijdens de koorzang nog steeds de bloedstollende tonen van Vangelis' synthesizer te horen zijn.




Voyage is ook het noemen waard: dit Franse discogezelschap maakt met Discotch een een echte wereld(muziek)hit avant la lettre, met genre-elementen uit de Afrikaanse, Schotse, country en Hawaiiaanse muziek. En dit is geen obscure track, maar was een dikke top 20-hit in Nederland.

Heel soms, als je slechts een enkel nummer van een artiest kent, moet je misschien wel erkennen dat je zo'n artiest toch nog een kans moet geven. UIteraard moet je ook niet afgaan op 1 nummer. Zoals in het geval van Bauhaus. Ik ken alleen het op deze site bewierookte Bela Lugosi's Dead. Nou, het kan me gestolen worden, heb daar helemaal niks mee. Maar toen kwam deze week Kick in the Eye om de hoek zeilen. Was meteen verknocht. Nee, dat kan toch niet diezelfde band zijn. Jawel dus. Kan natuurlijk ook zijn dat dit een van de meest toegankelijke tracks uit het oeuvre van de band is. Maar goed, ga toch eens op verkenning uit.
Eerder had ik dat met Sunday Morning van Velvet Underground. Goed nummer, maar de rest van hun oeuvre doet me, bij nadere beluistering, weinig. Mogelijk volgt Bauhaus de omgekeerde route. We gaan het horen.

Level 42, uit duizenden herkenbaar, dan toch eindelijk binnen. Kwam pas laat in mijn bronnen de lijst binnen, vandaar. Prachtige track.

Mooiste ontdekking is echter zangeres Rosanne Cash met het countrypop-achtige Seven Year Ache. Normaal is dit niet direct mijn favoriete genre, maar dit nummer trok meteen de aandacht. Moest daarbij ergens ook aan Ann Wilson van Heart denken en dan zeker het nummer All I Wanna Do. Moet me ook maar eens in Rosanne's nummers gaan verdiepen. Wie weet...

Van The Clash haal ik Guns of Brixton en Magnificent Seven altijd door elkaar. Die laatste is natuurlijk de hoogste nieuwe binnenkomer deze week. Geweldig nummer en een van hun beste singles na London Calling.

While You Wait vind ik de beste single van New Musik tot nu toe (ik ben niet zo'n grote fan van This World of Water). Echt een melancholisch pareltje, ergens tussen OMD en Buggles.

Deze van The Undertones was ik vergeten eigenlijk, maar misschien was dat wel omdat het veel opgewekter klinkt dan hun eerdere werk. Hoewel het onderwerp van het nummer dat niet is - blijkbaar gaat het over de hongerstaking uit '81, waarmee Ierse gevangen genomen in Noord-Ierland, protesteerden tegen Thatcher.

Duran Duran's Planet Earth staat nog hoog in de lijst, maar de opvolger is er ook al. Een wat minder bekende single, minder goed ook denk ik. Maar wel een prima plaat weer.

Grace Jones heeft zo'n beetje haar hele vorige album op single uitgebracht - ook de mindere singles. Dan valt het contrast met de eerste topsingle van de nieuwe plaat wel op. Hier is ze zo'n beetje op haar top.

Steve Winwood's While You See A Chance deed mij niet zoveel, Night Train daarentegen vind ik eigenlijk meteen uitstekend. Heerlijke groove en verder een warm en mysterieus nummer. Misschien dat ik While You See A Chance ergens iets te naïef/positief vond klinken.

Jessie's Girl heb ik een paar jaar terug bij een popquiz pas ontdekt. Daarvoor had ik er nog nooit van gehoord. Uitstekende powerpop-meezinger.

Van Bruce Springsteen zie ik ook de een na de andere single verschijnen. Ik weet het nog niet helemaal met Bruce, maar het melancholische Point-Blank vind ik wel de moeite waard.

Als je zo eens kijkt zit het heel wat nummers niet mee: puntenwinst en toch een plaats achteruit: Simple Minds, B-Movie, Vangelis.
De ergste klap kwam voor Rick James: geen puntenverlies maar toch van 13 naar 19. De lijst vertoont wel eens een grillig verloop.
Hoewel het er ogenschijnlijk vrij kalmpjes aan toe gaat. Alleen The Who daalt behoorlijk naar beneden.

De 'oudjes' van The Jacksons, Fischer-Z en New Order blijven het relatief goed doen. Al kon de eerstgenoemde band niet voorkomen dat we een nieuwe nummer één hebben: Level 42. Dat zat er ook wel aan te komen. Net zo goed als dat het onvermijdelijk was dat deze week zowel de Human League als Bruce Springsteen zich kwamen melden.

We werden het meer eens, vandaar opeens 42 punten voor de nummer 20. Het aantal nummers in al onze lijsten bleef gelijk, 123.
