Dat was ook heel erg lang mijn geloof. Maar, wat het is weet ik niet, ik ga de werken met Hagar ook steeds meer waarderen. Goede zanger was/is die surfdude toch. Een aantal slijmerige liefdesliedjes was wel altijd frequent bij Hagar maar die albums bieden ook ijzersterke rockers met F.U.C.K als beste uit de catalogus.

(Eddie) Van Halen was destijds (zó'n 30 jaar geleden) de reden dat ik tegen mijn pa zei: ..Ik stop met Klassieke gitaar en wil zo'n elektrisch 'ding'.....(I Wanna Rock)...nooit spiijt van gehad.

Het zal echter nog even duren voor het zover is. Eerst wil Eddie in juni trouwen met zijn vriendin Janie Liszewski en vervolgens het afstudeerfeestje van zijn zoon en bassist Wolfgang vieren. Dan is het echter zijn bedoeling om nieuw materiaal, waarvan hij grote hoeveelheden heeft liggen, op de plaat te zetten. Het is nu afwachten of David Lee Roth ook trek heeft in een nieuwe langspeler en toernee.

Ik hou ervan om artiesten en bands grondig te herontdekken. Namen die meerdere jaren mooi in de kast opgeborgen liggen en je dan opeens weer te voorschijn haalt, meestal omdat je er op een of andere manier aan herinnerd wordt. Zo luisteren massa's mensen nu opeens (weer) naar Michael Jackson. Ik heb het met Van Halen. In de plaatselijke bib hebben ze de dvd 'Live Without A Net' aangekocht, bij mij ging een lichtje op (O ja, Van Halen, was ik vergeten) en dan ben ik maar begonnen met hun cd's te herontdekken. Conclusie: de eerste twee albums blijven heel sterk, de overige ook sterk, maar niet in het geheel dan.
En dan de dvd, waarover het eigenlijk gaat. 'Live Without A Net' is de registratie van een concert uit de '5150-tour' uit 1986. Het laat me wat ontgoocheld achter. Met Sammy als zanger spelen ze haast geen nummers uit de Roth-periode, waardoor de setlist gevuld zit met veel mindere songs. De 4 bandleden zijn stuk voor stuk goede muzikanten, maar daarom hoeft dit niet geshowd te worden met minutenlang durende 'nummers' onder de naam 'drum solo', 'bass solo' en 'guitar solo'. Dat is zo saai. Een drumsolo is gewoon wat gemep op al die bakskes en schijven, een basgitaarsolo wat gemep op die gitaar en de gitaarsolo wat gestoef over het kunnen spelen. Het is zo typisch voor een band die stevige rock speelt, dat die solo's daar tussen moeten. Gaap. Geef mij maar drie oude nummers in de plaats die nu niet aan bod komen. Een ander minpunt is de houding van de leden, met de drummer als uitzondering, maar die moet natuurlijk ter plaatse blijven zitten. Die gasten willen elkaar overtreffen, zo van 'ik ben toch wel de tofste en het grootste fuifbeest'. Vrij ergerlijk. Veel te veel wind. Te hoog fuifgehalte.
Conclusie: Van halen blijft een degelijke band voor mij, maar live zie ik ze niet graag bezig.

According to the unofficial VAN HALEN fan site Van Halen News Desk, VAN HALEN has tapped producer/songwriter/musician John Shanks (whom Clive Davis calls "the father of that guitar-driven kind of pop sound") to helm the band's upcoming studio album, which the group plans to begin recording in January. "Sources" tell the Van Halen News Desk that the members of VAN HALEN are "very eager to tour, and that they want to tour behind new material. Eddie Van Halen has been very busy during most of 2010 writing music," reads a posting on the site. "Alex and Wolfgang Van Halen often join Eddie in the 5150 studio and the three of them have been hard at work jamming and recording demos. The three Van Halens have been sending the music to David Lee Roth, who's adding the lyrics. Two of our sources have heard some of the early versions of the tracks (without vocals) and were very pleased. The music is said to sound like straight ahead rock 'n' roll and 'very VAN HALEN.'" In addition, "the band is re-exploring Eddie's extensive library of unreleased songs and riffs, even reaching back to their early unreleased demos for added inspiration. The band is retooling and tweaking some of this mostly-unheard, incredible music, which have completely new lyrics from Roth. Eddie is even considering developing a song or two from the material that he wrote for 'The Wild Life' movie score in the mid-1980s."
Interestingly, VAN HALEN is allegedly planning on recording the next CD at John Shanks' Henson studio as well as the band's 5150 studio, making it the first time VAN HALEN will track an LP outside its own studio since it was built in 1983.
Larry Solters, the spokesman for VAN HALEN, recently dismissed as "untrue" a report the MelodicRock.com web site that indicated that work on the first VAN HALEN album in more than 25 years with David Lee Roth on vocals was moving forward. The site reported last month that the band had tapped producer Ross Hogarth (MÖTLEY CRÜE, COAL CHAMBER, FASTER PUSSYCAT, DEVILDRIVER) for the record, which was tentatively due out sometime in 2011. The report also stated that Roth was recording his vocal tracks at a different location than guitarist Eddie Van Halen's "5150" studio, adding that Eddie is "receiving various vocal tracks from the singer, but not always to the guitarist's satisfaction...it's a work in progress between Eddie and Dave."
The report also stated that Eddie had recorded most of the bass parts for the album. The band's touring bassist is his son, Wolfgang, who replaced founding member Michael Anthony.
Solters told MelodicRock.com that there is "no tour on the books" right now and "no new album on the books." He did, however, concede that the guys hung out together "working on stuff," but as of right now — there will be no album or tour in 2011.
Music publishing company Warner/Chappell Music announced in August that it had extended its publishing administration contract with guitarist Eddie Van Halen and drummer Alex Van Halen, noting that the band "is currently in the studio recording an album with (singer David Lee) Roth that is due for release in 2011."
Meanwhile, according to Billboard.com, VAN HALEN manager Irving Azoff, who is also the executive chairman of Live Nation, mentioned on two separate conference calls that VAN HALEN was expected to hit the road next year, presumably in support of a new record.

VAN HALEN COMMENCE WORK WITH PRODUCER JOHN SHANKS:
Van Halen will formally start work on a new studio album with Grammy Award winning producer John Shanks Monday January 17. The news of the band's plans was confirmed by myself this weekend.
Rumours of Shanks' involvement with the band surfaced a couple of months ago at the Van Halen Newsdesk. It can now be confirmed.
The band will record their first all-new studio album since 1998's Van Halen III and their first with original singer David Lee Roth since 1983's 1984.
There are no further details available about this latest stint in the studio, nor any suggestion of when the band will be finished and anything subsequently released. Manager Irving Azoff is said to be pushing the band to tour, but I'm told Eddie Van Halen is reluctant to do so without any new material to release.
So while a 2011 tour has been publicly mentioned previously by Azoff, it remains up in the air as to when, or even if a tour will happen this year. A record needs to be completed and I doubt anyone will want to start speculating as to when that will happen.
Questions remain about what happened to the much discussed 2010 recording sessions with producer Ross Hogarth. Officially denied, and not likely to ever be addressed, the fact remains the band were in the studio writing and working for much of 2010. Several famous names commented positively about hearing new material during 2010, including Dweezil Zappa & John 5.
Additionally Warner Publishing issued a press release mid-year stating that the band had re-signed to the company, adding that they were (at that stage) in the studio recording.
Additional rumors remain about Warner's desire to release remastered versions of the band's Sammy Hagar fronted albums and I'm hearing talk of a career spanning Box Set at some stage - fuelled by news that Warner also reached new publishing agreements with Sammy Hagar, Michael Anthony and David Lee Roth in 2010.

VAN HALEN - NEW ALBUM RUMOUR ROUND-UP:
Dear rabid Van Halen fans - if you are looking for a factually infallible, dead on, "here are the facts" news update....this ain't it!
But seriously, a news report that does fit that description isn't far away as David Lee Roth tells us to "Get Ready..." (www.davidleeroth.com) and Van Halen actually open up a Facebook page (www.facebook.com/VanHalen). And Alter Bridge/Creed guitarist Mark Tremonti (friend of Wolfgang) starts yakking after sitting in on the trio of Van Halen's playing new songs live in the studio - reporting back that the band used ''old demos for inspiration for new material" (www.vhlinks.com/vbforums/mark-tremonti-new-t52379.html).
Plus the band are also hitting to road for the first time since 2007 with dates in Australia in 10 weeks' time. So we know something's happening right?
Right! But when are we going to really hear something official and when will we hear the first new Van Halen material since 2004 and the first new album with David Lee Roth since 1983? Soon folks....
What we know is that the album is done and mixed...John Shanks finishing production work on it earlier this year (with other producer names likely to appear inside the album credits.) The rumoured album title is VH '11, 2011 (or Two Zero One One to be precise) and all rumours point to a mid/late September release.
A single was again rumoured to hit airwaves this weekend, but failed to happen.
What I have previously stated is that I personally believe the new album will be released in October, after Van Halen return home from Australia and a single could likely appear late this month or in August.
I am hoping to have some more precise information from a source close to official goings on later this week. Stay tuned...
But in the meantime, I was contacted last week by an anonymous source with a summary of rumours and "inside" information they happened to be privy to. Ok....due to the demand from fans wanting to hear about anything Van Halen related to keep them busy while counting down the seconds to hell freezing over (the new album appearing in store), here is a summary of the information I was sent.
This is certainly not being printed as gospel or fact, but merely as yet another in the series of much loved Van Halen Rumor Reports that have been printed over the last decade of this band's colourful history. So with that disclaimer in place....here goes folks....
RUMOUR ROUND UP!
- Eddie Van Halen was apparently prepared to tour again with no new album, reluctant to produce new songs. David Lee Roth and especially Wolfgang Van Halen wanted to record new tracks. Wolfgang Van Halen finally convinced his father that he didn't want to go out on tour to replace Michael Anthony, with no new material and without David Lee Roth's input.
- It is suggested that the music was the main thing in EVH's mind and David Lee Roth was asked only to contribute lyrics.
- Seventeen songs were prepared in demo form. One was an instrumental. Fourteen songs were properly recorded. This includes the instrumental. A couple of tracks are likely to be held over as bonus tracks for various uses. Management are currently negotiating with specialist retailers for a deal to release the album, with these bonus tracks possible to make an appearance if an agreement is reached.
- Because of distributing/promotion matters, the release date of first single is still up in the air, although it will (apparently) 'definitely' happen no later than 2nd week of August. The album is expected to be ready to ship in September. [I still say October...].
- Only two tracks feature keyboards of any type. One is the instrumental which briefly features piano. The other features keyboards in the intro, and 'lightly' in the chorus.
- Although Wolfang Van Halen did not write any of the lyrics to the new album, he had a bass solo he was preparing that he titled "Hurricanes", for which David Lee Roth wrote lyrics with the same working title. It is unclear if this song will be included on the album, but it was recorded in demo-form.

The proposed artwork does not show all edges of the circle due to a possible 'infringement' with the candy-maker. Rather the outer edges of the circle are 'cut-off' by the square-edged artwork. The reverse side of the album jacket features all four members standing by a garden like area shot in a sepia tone. This photo and others were taken in May on the grounds of Edward Van Halen's studio, 5150. Inner booklet/lyric sheets photos were also shot in and around 5150. - Two songs recorded have been selected as singles. One song sounding like an early era Van Halen combination of "Beautiful Girls/Jamie's Crying", and the other song sounding more in the vein of "Unchained"/"Drop Dead Legs" (this one features a very lengthy guitar solo by comparison).
- Although no song titles are 'confirmed' at this point, some of the 'working' song titles were/are: "Hurricanes", "Stop Talking" (which is one of the possible first two singles), "Down This Road", and "Who's Looking Back At You?". Other titles have been mentioned, only these four keep resurfacing.

VAN HALEN - NEW ALBUM RUMOUR ROUND-UP:
Dear rabid Van Halen fans - if you are looking for a factually infallible, dead on, "here are the facts" news update....this ain't it!
But seriously, a news report that does fit that description isn't far away as David Lee Roth tells us to "Get Ready..." (www.davidleeroth.com) and Van Halen actually open up a Facebook page (www.facebook.com/VanHalen). And Alter Bridge/Creed guitarist Mark Tremonti (friend of Wolfgang) starts yakking after sitting in on the trio of Van Halen's playing new songs live in the studio - reporting back that the band used ''old demos for inspiration for new material" (www.vhlinks.com/vbforums/mark-tremonti-new-t52379.html).
Plus the band are also hitting to road for the first time since 2007 with dates in Australia in 10 weeks' time. So we know something's happening right?
Right! But when are we going to really hear something official and when will we hear the first new Van Halen material since 2004 and the first new album with David Lee Roth since 1983? Soon folks....
What we know is that the album is done and mixed...John Shanks finishing production work on it earlier this year (with other producer names likely to appear inside the album credits.) The rumoured album title is VH '11, 2011 (or Two Zero One One to be precise) and all rumours point to a mid/late September release.
A single was again rumoured to hit airwaves this weekend, but failed to happen.
What I have previously stated is that I personally believe the new album will be released in October, after Van Halen return home from Australia and a single could likely appear late this month or in August.
I am hoping to have some more precise information from a source close to official goings on later this week. Stay tuned...
But in the meantime, I was contacted last week by an anonymous source with a summary of rumours and "inside" information they happened to be privy to. Ok....due to the demand from fans wanting to hear about anything Van Halen related to keep them busy while counting down the seconds to hell freezing over (the new album appearing in store), here is a summary of the information I was sent.
This is certainly not being printed as gospel or fact, but merely as yet another in the series of much loved Van Halen Rumor Reports that have been printed over the last decade of this band's colourful history. So with that disclaimer in place....here goes folks....
RUMOUR ROUND UP!
- Eddie Van Halen was apparently prepared to tour again with no new album, reluctant to produce new songs. David Lee Roth and especially Wolfgang Van Halen wanted to record new tracks. Wolfgang Van Halen finally convinced his father that he didn't want to go out on tour to replace Michael Anthony, with no new material and without David Lee Roth's input.
- It is suggested that the music was the main thing in EVH's mind and David Lee Roth was asked only to contribute lyrics.
- Seventeen songs were prepared in demo form. One was an instrumental. Fourteen songs were properly recorded. This includes the instrumental. A couple of tracks are likely to be held over as bonus tracks for various uses. Management are currently negotiating with specialist retailers for a deal to release the album, with these bonus tracks possible to make an appearance if an agreement is reached.
- Because of distributing/promotion matters, the release date of first single is still up in the air, although it will (apparently) 'definitely' happen no later than 2nd week of August. The album is expected to be ready to ship in September. [I still say October...].
- Only two tracks feature keyboards of any type. One is the instrumental which briefly features piano. The other features keyboards in the intro, and 'lightly' in the chorus.
- Although Wolfang Van Halen did not write any of the lyrics to the new album, he had a bass solo he was preparing that he titled "Hurricanes", for which David Lee Roth wrote lyrics with the same working title. It is unclear if this song will be included on the album, but it was recorded in demo-form.

John Shanks did his bit and now Ross Hogarth, after working with the band in 2010 is back at 5150 to finish the job. There is a single imminent however, but again a date for that arriving at radio or retail is also not yet firm. I'm told "they" are still working on a final mix for the single.
As for a date for the album - I have said all along my money is on October. I'm sticking to that, but with this info, I'd say late October now. No way will the album drop while the band are in Australia and it is desired to have the album out by November because...
- Van Halen's US tour will commence in NOVEMBER!
- Van Halen's 2011/2012 tour will commence in November and I'm told it is likely that the band will stay on the road thru the next Northern summer (mid-2012) with the tour taking in Asia, South America and Europe (watch for the band to possibly headline some festivals in Europe 2012).

Ben nu in de Mohegan Sun, gaan morgen een hopelijk fantastisch concert beleven. Een ding is wel duidelijk, we hebben gigantisch gemazzeld met de kaartjes. Alle Amerikanen die wij hier spreken hebben achter het net gevist en balen daar gigantisch van. Onderweg van het vliegveld twee keer ADKOT gedraaid, en het grappige is dat ik nog steeds niet weet welke plaat ik het lekkerst vind. Een ding is wel zeker: Eddie knalt de speakers uit! Stay frosty people! Uitgebreid verslag volgt uiteraard.

Dames en heren: zoals beloofd mijn uitgebreide verslag en ik kan alvast verklappen: het was ongeëvenaard goed!
Van Halen concert, 5-3-2-12, Mohegan Sun, Uncasville, Connecticut
De inleiding
Ik ben Van Halen fan. Vindt het onweerstaanbare muziek, met als grondbasis de heerlijkste gitaartonen van meester-gitarist Eddie van Halen: heavy riffs en zingende, dansende en unieke solo's. Combineer dit met de retestrakke en drummer - broer van - Alex van Halen. Voeg hier wat hemelse achtergrondkoortjes en niet al te diepgaande feelgood teksten aan toe. Maak het af met het flamboyante gedrag van uberfrontman David Lee Roth en je hebt songs die altijd een grijns op je gezicht doen belanden. Automatisch.
Ook de Sammy Hagar periode en de Gary Cherone periode kon ik goed hebben. Al bleef Diamond Dave wel altijd onbewust mijn voorkeur houden. Want die automatische grijns, die kwam toch altijd bij songs uit die periode.
Toen het nieuwe album A Different Kind Of Truth uitkwam, waren de verwachtingen erg hoog. Nieuwe tunes met David Lee Roth, dat kon zomaar weer iets heel moois opleveren. En toen daar direct het bericht volgde dat er een tour in de States en Canada (een World (!) tour, zoals op de tourshirts staat) zou komen, wisten mijn broer in ik meteen: hier moesten wij naar toe. Maar waar? Las Vegas (net zoals wij in 2007 hadden gedaan)? New York? Vancouver? En hoe kregen wij dit thuis uitgelegd? Wij werken ook nog eens in hetzelfde bedrijf in hogere managementposities, dus zomaar even weg was ook niet makkelijk. Maar, waar een wil is, is een weg. Of liever, soms moet je gewoon een beetje mazzel hebben. Er stond namelijk al een trip van een paar dagen in de planning naar ons zusterbedrijf in Connecticut. Mijn broer (de slimmere van de twee) kwam al snel met de o zo logische maar even briljante oplossing: wat als wij nu een paar dagen vastplakken aan onze zakenreis? Van Halen treedt op in Connecticut, in het casino-resort The Mohegan Sun, op zo'n anderhalf uur rijden van New Haven, onze zakelijke bestemming. Auto huren, mini roadtrip, lekker eten, gokken, quality time met je broer, wat wil je nog meer? Nou niets dus. Wat zalvende en geruststellende woorden thuis (ja schat, dit is puur toeval. Nee schat, ik ga niet al ons spaargeld vergokken. Hooguit de helft!). Eerst de tickets voor het concert (110 dollar per stuk + een "convenience fee van 14$ per kaartje, de ticketmaster-bastards!), snel wat hotels en een vliegticket regelen en dat was dat: vliegen naar Boston, rijden naar New Haven en van daaruit snel door naar de Mohegan Sun voor The Mighty Van Halen!
De venue
The Mohegan Sun is een immens groot casino-hotel complex in de middle of nowhere. Immens doet het eigenlijk nog tekort. Megagroot. Duizelingwekkend groot. Maar waarom in Uncasville, Connecticut, of all places? Dat is een klein plaatsje, zelfs voor Nederlandse begrippen. Het antwoord is simpel. Uncasville ligt midden in een Indiaans reservaat. En daarom niet gebonden aan staatsgebonden regels. De perfecte plek om een zonder gedoe en lastige regelgeving een casino te bouwen. En: "If you build it, they will come." Ter illustratie: het hotel heeft 1.200 hotelkamers. 13.000 (!) parkeerplaatsen. 40 restaurants en drie aparte casino's. In totaal meer dan zevenduizend gokautomaten. Een eigen shoppingmall, diverse watervallen en zijn eigen (verzonken) arena met 10.000 plaatsen.
Het concert
Het concert was binnen een dag uitverkocht. Wij spraken met veel Amerikanen die er graag bij hadden willen zijn, maar te laat waren. En wat baalden ze! Het maakte ons alleen maar nog trotser. Jammer jongens, maar wij hebben dus wel tickets!
Om 19.30 uur zou het concert beginnen. Zoals het een goed concertganger betaamt waren wij ruim op tijd, 19.00 sharp. 2e ring, rechts van het podium. Inderdaad, vol zicht op Eddie. Zoals ik al zei, mijn broer denkt nog wel eens na over dingen. Wij schrokken ons rot. Ik denk dat er zo'n honderd man in de arena zaten. Het druppelde wel wat binnen, maar om 19.20 uur was de zaal misschien voor 25% gevuld. Het was toch wel uitverkocht? Wij vreesden voor een fiasco. Ik zei nog bemoedigend tegen mijn broer: "tuurlijk is het uitverkocht, anders zouden ze nooit de tweede ring open houden". Maar ergens beklijfde bij mij ook het gevoel dat de tent leeg zou blijven. 19.45 uur: 50% vol. 19.50 uur: 60% vol. En toen gebeurde er iets geks. In letterlijk 7 minuten stroomde de Arena tot op de nok toe gevuld helemaal vol. Dus toch!
Om 19.58 uur precies gingen de lichten uit en startte Alex zijn drumintro. Ze begonnen meteen met een knaller van jewelste: Unchained. En dit was het begin van een show die zijn weerga niet kent. Keihard rockend, retestrak, een feilloze solo en Diamond Dave die vanaf de eerste minuut alle registers opentrekt. Flirten, geinen, dansen, uitdagen en vooral lol hebben. En daar kwam die meteen: de grijns op mijn gezicht. Ik keek mijn broer aan en wij knikten: dit zit wel snor! Eddie zag er zeer goed uit. Iets zwaarder dan normaal, maar op een goede manier. Haar halflang en een gezonde, frisse uitstraling.
De band nam ons in twee uur mee naar een soort van geschiedenisles in fantastische rocksongs. De welbekende knallers als Panama, Somebody Get Me A Doctor, Hot For Teacher en Running With The Devil en Aint' Talkin', maar ook het wat onbekendere (maar niet minder onweerstaanbare) werk, zoals Hear About It Later, Girl Gone Bad, Women In Love en I'll Wait. Vier tracks van ADKOT: Chinatown, She's The Woman, The Trouble With Never en Tattoo.
Eddie was absoluut on fire. De gretigheid spatte er werkelijk van af. Alle solo's, al het slagwerk, alle trucs en alle kick-ass licks: Eddie was de meester. Hoogtepunt van de avond was geheel onverwacht Romeo Delight van het album Women And Children First. Eddie speelde dit nummer of zijn leven er van af hing. Zijn solo was verschroeiend (dank Iggy!) in het kwadraat. Ik dacht serieus (en ik meen dit serieus) dat Eddie zijn versterkers op zou blazen als hij niet een beetje in zou dammen. Kippenvel. Het gehele concert door waren er de knipogen, duimen omhoog en de fameuze "Eddie-shuffles", de danspasjes die hij alleen doet als hij er echt zin in heeft. Ook veel aandoenlijke vader en zoon momenten tussen Eddie en zoon Wolfgang, die duidelijk gegroeid is in stage presence. Hij staat muzikaal als een blok en begint losser en losser te komen.
David Lee Roth, die zijn headset godzijdank had ingeruild voor een vaste microfoon stand, had er zin in: "This is gonna be a hot one, i can feel it!" verklaarde hij na het derde nummer, en damn: hij kreeg gelijk. Veel van zijn beroemde karatekicks, veel melige maar o zo lekkere one liners en uiteraard een aantal referenties aan het casino(buffet).
De solo van Eddie was met 8 minuten wat korter dan we gewend zijn, maar ook hier wist hij de voltallige arena ademloos en vol bewondering op zich gericht.
Na precies twee uur met natuurlijk Jump als afsluiter en een paar grote confetti kanonnen was het dan klaar. Als een wervelwind kwam de Mighty Van Halen voorbij, rockten je sokken eraf en lieten je enigszins verdwaasd maar oh zo voldaan achter. Veel high-fives in het publiek na het concert. Men wist unaniem: we hebben een band in topvorm gezien.
Waren er dan ook minpunten? Eigenlijk niet. Vooruit: twee kleine.
De eerste was volledig mijn eigen schuld. Ik wilde twee tourshirts kopen maar had geen zin om in lange rijen te staan. Dus ik dacht: dan maar tijdens de obligate drumsolo. Alle tijd, en je mist niet veel. Dat werkte perfect. Geen rijen bij de merchandise shops en ook nog ruim tijd om een sanitaire stop te maken. Dacht ik. Ik had er alleen geen rekening mee gehouden dat Big Al zijn drum solo maar tot twee of drie minuten zou beperken en daarna voluit door zou knallen in You Really Got Me. Gevolg was dat ik dit prijsnummer bijna volledig gemist heb en pas bij de slotakkoorden (de feestelijke finale van het nummer) terug kwam. Stom, maar eigen schuld.
Tweede minpunt(je): ik had graag een van de absolute prijsnummers van het nieuwe album willen horen (As Is, Big River, Honeybabysweetiedoll, Stay Frosty). Ik begrijp dat je met zo'n enorme catalogus keuzes moet maken, maar 1 van deze 4 had het concert een 10 gemaakt. Nu blijft het steken op 10-.
De conclusie:
Toptrip gehad. Heel veel lol met mijn broer gehad, een absoluut fantastisch concert gezien en een uitverkochte arena die volledig uit zijn dak ging met een herboren Eddie van Halen. Ook de verstokte Hagar fans raad ik aan om de band te komen zien als ze hopelijk deze kant op komen. Ook al heb je niet veel met Diamond Dave, het is werkelijk een genot om Eddie zo te horen en zien spelen. Je merkt het ook aan de extra trucjes, geluidjes en net wat langere solo's die hij uit zijn gitaar tovert: hij wil weer laten zien dat hij het beste jongetje van de klas is, zonder dat het vervelend wordt.
Oh ja. Aan het eind van het concert had ik kramp in mijn kaken. Dat krijg je als je twee uur lang een permante grijns op je gezicht hebt.

Wij werken ook nog eens in hetzelfde bedrijf in hogere managementposities, dus zomaar even weg was ook niet makkelijk. Maar, waar een wil is, is een weg. Of liever, soms moet je gewoon een beetje mazzel hebben. Er stond namelijk al een trip van een paar dagen in de planning naar ons zusterbedrijf in Connecticut. Mijn broer (de slimmere van de twee) kwam al snel met de o zo logische maar even briljante oplossing: wat als wij nu een paar dagen vastplakken aan onze zakenreis? Van Halen treedt op in Connecticut, in het casino-resort The Mohegan Sun, op zo'n anderhalf uur rijden van New Haven, onze zakelijke bestemming. Auto huren, mini roadtrip, lekker eten, gokken, quality time met je broer, wat wil je nog meer? Nou niets dus. Wat zalvende en geruststellende woorden thuis (ja schat, dit is puur toeval. Nee schat, ik ga niet al ons spaargeld vergokken. Hooguit de helft!). Eerst de tickets voor het concert (110 dollar per stuk + een "convenience fee van 14$ per kaartje, de ticketmaster-bastards!), snel wat hotels en een vliegticket regelen en dat was dat: vliegen naar Boston, rijden naar New Haven en van daaruit snel door naar de Mohegan Sun voor The Mighty Van Halen!
De venue
The Mohegan Sun is een immens groot casino-hotel complex in de middle of nowhere. Immens doet het eigenlijk nog tekort. Megagroot. Duizelingwekkend groot. Maar waarom in Uncasville, Connecticut, of all places? Dat is een klein plaatsje, zelfs voor Nederlandse begrippen. Het antwoord is simpel. Uncasville ligt midden in een Indiaans reservaat. En daarom niet gebonden aan staatsgebonden regels. De perfecte plek om een zonder gedoe en lastige regelgeving een casino te bouwen. En: "If you build it, they will come." Ter illustratie: het hotel heeft 1.200 hotelkamers. 13.000 (!) parkeerplaatsen. 40 restaurants en drie aparte casino's. In totaal meer dan zevenduizend gokautomaten. Een eigen shoppingmall, diverse watervallen en zijn eigen (verzonken) arena met 10.000 plaatsen.
Het concert
Het concert was binnen een dag uitverkocht. Wij spraken met veel Amerikanen die er graag bij hadden willen zijn, maar te laat waren. En wat baalden ze! Het maakte ons alleen maar nog trotser. Jammer jongens, maar wij hebben dus wel tickets!
Om 19.30 uur zou het concert beginnen. Zoals het een goed concertganger betaamt waren wij ruim op tijd, 19.00 sharp. 2e ring, rechts van het podium. Inderdaad, vol zicht op Eddie. Zoals ik al zei, mijn broer denkt nog wel eens na over dingen. Wij schrokken ons rot. Ik denk dat er zo'n honderd man in de arena zaten. Het druppelde wel wat binnen, maar om 19.20 uur was de zaal misschien voor 25% gevuld. Het was toch wel uitverkocht? Wij vreesden voor een fiasco. Ik zei nog bemoedigend tegen mijn broer: "tuurlijk is het uitverkocht, anders zouden ze nooit de tweede ring open houden". Maar ergens beklijfde bij mij ook het gevoel dat de tent leeg zou blijven. 19.45 uur: 50% vol. 19.50 uur: 60% vol. En toen gebeurde er iets geks. In letterlijk 7 minuten stroomde de Arena tot op de nok toe gevuld helemaal vol. Dus toch!
Om 19.58 uur precies gingen de lichten uit en startte Alex zijn drumintro. Ze begonnen meteen met een knaller van jewelste: Unchained. En dit was het begin van een show die zijn weerga niet kent. Keihard rockend, retestrak, een feilloze solo en Diamond Dave die vanaf de eerste minuut alle registers opentrekt. Flirten, geinen, dansen, uitdagen en vooral lol hebben. En daar kwam die meteen: de grijns op mijn gezicht. Ik keek mijn broer aan en wij knikten: dit zit wel snor! Eddie zag er zeer goed uit. Iets zwaarder dan normaal, maar op een goede manier. Haar halflang en een gezonde, frisse uitstraling.
De band nam ons in twee uur mee naar een soort van geschiedenisles in fantastische rocksongs. De welbekende knallers als Panama, Somebody Get Me A Doctor, Hot For Teacher en Running With The Devil en Aint' Talkin', maar ook het wat onbekendere (maar niet minder onweerstaanbare) werk, zoals Hear About It Later, Girl Gone Bad, Women In Love en I'll Wait. Vier tracks van ADKOT: Chinatown, She's The Woman, The Trouble With Never en Tattoo.
Eddie was absoluut on fire. De gretigheid spatte er werkelijk van af. Alle solo's, al het slagwerk, alle trucs en alle kick-ass licks: Eddie was de meester. Hoogtepunt van de avond was geheel onverwacht Romeo Delight van het album Women And Children First. Eddie speelde dit nummer of zijn leven er van af hing. Zijn solo was verschroeiend (dank Iggy!) in het kwadraat. Ik dacht serieus (en ik meen dit serieus) dat Eddie zijn versterkers op zou blazen als hij niet een beetje in zou dammen. Kippenvel. Het gehele concert door waren er de knipogen, duimen omhoog en de fameuze "Eddie-shuffles", de danspasjes die hij alleen doet als hij er echt zin in heeft. Ook veel aandoenlijke vader en zoon momenten tussen Eddie en zoon Wolfgang, die duidelijk gegroeid is in stage presence. Hij staat muzikaal als een blok en begint losser en losser te komen.
David Lee Roth, die zijn headset godzijdank had ingeruild voor een vaste microfoon stand, had er zin in: "This is gonna be a hot one, i can feel it!" verklaarde hij na het derde nummer, en damn: hij kreeg gelijk. Veel van zijn beroemde karatekicks, veel melige maar o zo lekkere one liners en uiteraard een aantal referenties aan het casino(buffet).
De solo van Eddie was met 8 minuten wat korter dan we gewend zijn, maar ook hier wist hij de voltallige arena ademloos en vol bewondering op zich gericht.
Na precies twee uur met natuurlijk Jump als afsluiter en een paar grote confetti kanonnen was het dan klaar. Als een wervelwind kwam de Mighty Van Halen voorbij, rockten je sokken eraf en lieten je enigszins verdwaasd maar oh zo voldaan achter. Veel high-fives in het publiek na het concert. Men wist unaniem: we hebben een band in topvorm gezien.
Waren er dan ook minpunten? Eigenlijk niet. Vooruit: twee kleine.
De eerste was volledig mijn eigen schuld. Ik wilde twee tourshirts kopen maar had geen zin om in lange rijen te staan. Dus ik dacht: dan maar tijdens de obligate drumsolo. Alle tijd, en je mist niet veel. Dat werkte perfect. Geen rijen bij de merchandise shops en ook nog ruim tijd om een sanitaire stop te maken. Dacht ik. Ik had er alleen geen rekening mee gehouden dat Big Al zijn drum solo maar tot twee of drie minuten zou beperken en daarna voluit door zou knallen in You Really Got Me. Gevolg was dat ik dit prijsnummer bijna volledig gemist heb en pas bij de slotakkoorden (de feestelijke finale van het nummer) terug kwam. Stom, maar eigen schuld.
Tweede minpunt(je): ik had graag een van de absolute prijsnummers van het nieuwe album willen horen (As Is, Big River, Honeybabysweetiedoll, Stay Frosty). Ik begrijp dat je met zo'n enorme catalogus keuzes moet maken, maar 1 van deze 4 had het concert een 10 gemaakt. Nu blijft het steken op 10-.
De conclusie:
Toptrip gehad. Heel veel lol met mijn broer gehad, een absoluut fantastisch concert gezien en een uitverkochte arena die volledig uit zijn dak ging met een herboren Eddie van Halen. Ook de verstokte Hagar fans raad ik aan om de band te komen zien als ze hopelijk deze kant op komen. Ook al heb je niet veel met Diamond Dave, het is werkelijk een genot om Eddie zo te horen en zien spelen. Je merkt het ook aan de extra trucjes, geluidjes en net wat langere solo's die hij uit zijn gitaar tovert: hij wil weer laten zien dat hij het beste jongetje van de klas is, zonder dat het vervelend wordt.
Oh ja. Aan het eind van het concert had ik kramp in mijn kaken. Dat krijg je als je twee uur lang een permante grijns op je gezicht hebt.

Ha ha die bollie maakt me best wel op een positieve manier vreselijk jaloers. Machtig mooi man.Mijn beste pal schreef onlangs nog dat dit iets voor ons was geweest. Het is een detail maar ook ik vond het maar niks dat dave rond liep zonder zijn befaamde microfoon ha.

@Bollieblauw: bedankt voor je geweldige verslag en het bevestigt mijn beeld dat ik in de vele live recensies heb gelezen, Van Halen is on fire en de nieuwe nummers blijken live net zo goed te zijn als op het onnavolgbare album ADKOT. Ook gaaf om te zien dat er verborgen pareltjes uit het oeuvre worden gespeeld. Voor Van Halen's doen best wat variaties in de setlist, minimaal, maar voor de echte fan een ware belevenis. Nu maar hopen op een Europese tour. Stay frosty!
