heb je niet zoveel met drumsolo's?

Ouder-wordende-drummers: Lars Ulrich (Metallica) mept er dikwijls naast en kan soms met moeite mee, Nicko McBrain (Iron Maiden) is voor mij gewoonweg niet strak genoeg ... en dan heb je Neil Peart: duizelingwekkend strak en gevarieerd. Hem zul je nooit op een foutje betrappen en in tegenstelling tot de meeste drummers ("Kijk eens, Mama, wat ik kan" ofwel genoemd drumgemasturbeer) zal Neil Peart er altijd een punt van maken om van zijn drumsolo als het ware een nieuwe song te maken en dat telkens opnieuw weer want bij iedere toer voegt hij nieuwe elementen toe en laat hij andere weg. Ik haat drumsolo's en gitaarsolo's buiten de context van een song, maar voor bepaalde drummers maak ik graag een uitzondering en één van die drummers is Neil Peart. Cheers!

This 3 disc DVD set, also available as a Blu-ray Disc, follows their Zoë Vision DVD releases Rush-R30 (2005) and Rush in Rio (2003).

The Snakes & Arrows Live DVD (full track listing below) was filmed with 21 High Definition cameras in 16x9 widescreen format, over two nights in October 2007 at the Netherlands’ Ahoy Rotterdam arena during the renowned rock trio’s lengthy world tour. Additional SD footage was filmed in Atlanta this past July. The five month trek supporting Rush’s critically acclaimed 2007 studio release, Snakes & Arrows, which includes the Grammy® Award-nominated track, "Malignant Narcissism," topped Pollstar’s Top 100 2007 Tours list at #12.

While previous DVD releases showcase different sides of the band , this DVD offers fans a rare and close up look at the prodigious musicianship for which the band is renown. Cameras follow bassist and vocalist Geddy Lee, guitarist Alex Lifeson and drummer Neil Peart, closely, capturing not only their playing, note for note, but also the intimacy they share on stage. The diverse track list includes many new songs from Snakes & Arrows as well as old favorites like “Tom Sawyer” and “Freewill” plus an explosive rendition of "Between the Wheels."" Among the hidden gems and numerous special tour moments included as extras is the fan coveted "What’s That Smell" vignette and outtakes, a skit used to intro the second set, which capitalizes on the still emerging comedic talents of both Alex and Geddy who excel (and revel) in their roles as wild characters. Een geweldige beeldkwaliteit, spatzuiver. En de muziek, daar is al genoeg over gezegd. Kippenvel gewoon, zeker als je in Ahoy bent geweest.

En,.......is the time right?

Een tijdje geleden door iemand getipt om deze band te ontdekken.
Ik kocht dan blind een dubbele verzamelaar "GOLD" ter kennismaking.
Helaas, ik heb de plaat enkele keren beluisterd, maar echt haast niets wat daarop staat kan me bekoren.
Is het de "weirde" stem van de zanger, is het de muziek an sich.... geen idee, het dubbeltje rolt niet, ik vind er voorlopig echt geen zak aan.
Het moet màànden geleden zijn dat ik nog een poging gewaagd heb.
Zelfs de naam - ik zat deze week mijn hersens te pijnigen omdat ik me hun naam voor de geest wou halen - maar die kwam maar niet... echt waar!
Tot ik hier vanavond een bespreking tegenkwam, en ik dacht.... god ja, dat is die band die me niet echt aanspreekt...
Tja, ik deed al erg mijn best, maar soms pakt de verf gewoon niet, not my piece of cake, niet alles kan een mens bekoren....
Het zij zo.
Waarmee ik geenszins afbreuk wil doen aan de verdiensten van deze band. Gezien de grote schare fans, moet dat toch wel iets biezonder zijn, alleen.... ik hoor het niet, met de beste wil van de wereld niet!

Tja....dat kan.
Geddy Lee is een zanger met een heel apart stemgeluid, beslist niet een doorsnee rock-zangerstem. Daarnaast speelt hij basgitaar op een heerlijke, soms wat funky-achtige manier. En speelt hij verdienstelijk keyboards.
De drummer, Neil Peart, staat voor mij op eenzame hoogte. Wat die man doet is af en toe (technisch) niet te volgen.
Alex Lifeson is een goed gitarist die geheel past in de muziek van Rush. Perfect meespelend, een rauwe en snerpende sound en creatief ingesteld.
Tja....ik lust er wel pap van.

Rush Reveals "Retrospective III"

It's the third edition of career-spanning collections and features music from the renouned rock trio's two decades with Atlantic Records; hightlights include new remixes and a previously unreleased live track. The two disc CD/DVD set features music videos, live concert performances, and a rare television appearance; "RETROSPECTIVE III (1989 - 2008)" arrives on March 3rd.

Anthem/Atlantic recording group Rush has announced details of the upcoming third volume in its continuing compilation series. “RETROSPECTIVE III (1989-2008)” arrives in stores on March 3rd.

The collection - available as both individual CD and two-disc CD/DVD set - features tracks culled from the legendary trio's two decades with Atlantic Records, spanning such acclaimed studio works as 1989's “PRESTO,” 1991's “ROLL THE BONES,” 1993's “COUNTERPARTS,” 1996's “TEST FOR ECHO,” 2002's “VAPOR TRAILS,” and 2007's “SNAKES & ARROWS” (see attached tracklisting). In addition, “RETROSPECTIVE III” features a previously unreleased live version of the classic “Ghost of a Chance,” recorded live in Atlanta during Rush's 2008 “Snakes & Arrows Tour,” as well as two tracks - “One Little Victory” and “Earthshine” - newly remixed by the band's Alex Lifeson and master mixer Richard Chycki (Aerosmith, Mick Jagger, P. Diddy).

The “RETROSPECTIVE III” DVD gathers the band's 10 stunning music videos during the Atlantic years, including clips for fan favorites such as “The Pass,” “Roll The Bones,” “Stick It Out,” “Driven,” and the Grammy Award-nominated “Malignant Narcissism.” What's more, the DVD includes a trio of live videos filmed in Frankfurt, Germany during Rush's 2004 “R30: 30th Anniversary World Tour,” highlighted by a masterful performance of The Who's classic “The Seeker” (originally recorded by Rush for 2004's “FEEDBACK”). As an added bonus, the band has included a rare televised performance of the classic “Tom Sawyer” and an on-camera interview featuring all three members.

Op de cd;s zit natuurlijk niemand te wachten, dat weet de platenmaatschappij ook dus die gooit er een dvd bij die dan wel weer heel interessant is. Dus nog maar even afwachten wat de prijs zal worden...

Ik heb er even over nagedacht en stel mezelf en anderen de volgende vraag: is Rush akkoord gegaan met de remixen van One Little Victory en Earthshine, want dat valt me toch iets tegen. Wel blijf ik blij dat ze niet met onuitgegeven nummers afkomen, want dat is pas geldklopperij. Misschien beter afwachten tot een remaster van Vapor Trails...

Zijn het echt remixes of zijn het gewoon meer zogenaamde radio edits waar eigenlijk weinig aan veranderd is enkel wat radio vriendelijker maken (minder solo's, wat korter e.d.)

Een remaster van Vapor Trails zou geen overbodige luxe zijn.
Wat is die plaat beroerd en overstuurd opgenomen!

Ik heb laatst eens gekeken naar de DVD-s van Replay X-3. Wat een prachtige shows zijn dat toch.
De heren zijn dan uiteraard een stukkie jonger dan nu. De energie en het speelplezier spat er werkelijk vanaf. De jaren '80 zijn toch wel mijn favoriete Rush-periode en mede daarom spreken de opnames mij erg aan. Echt kippenvel als je bijvoorbeeld een live-uitvoering van "The Weapon" te zien krijgt.
Neil Peart die voortdurend aan het goochelen is met zijn drumstokjes, een over het podium dansende Alex en een bevlogen Geddy Lee. Topklasse!

maar... deze Replay is zeker nooit gewoon op cd verschenen?

Nee, niet los verkrijgbaar voorzover ik weet.
Replay X 3 is een box-set welke bestaat uit 3 DVD's en één CD.
De CD is van de "Grace under Pressure Tour 1984".

de box is er volgens mij uit gegaan, de dvd's zijn nu los verschenen. De cd is verder nergens te verkrijgen.

Ik probeer de CD te downloaden maar dat gaat niet echt van harte.
Overigens is de complete box (3 DVD's en CD) gewoon verkrijgbaar bij Bol.com voor € 34,99.

Via Dream Theater bij Rush terechtgekomen. Rush is helemaal nieuw voor me, dus ik hoop dat het me bevalt.

* Ullrich.
Ullrich doet meer dan ernaast meppen hoor. Het is gewoon een slechte drummer. Technisch is hij echt niet goed. Hij kan een speed halen, maakt vele fouten, en af en toe trekt het ook op niets (Snare Drum in St.Anger )

* McBrain
Ook McBrain is natuurlijk niet te vergelijken met Peart. En toch vind ik hem een goede drummer. Dat hij niet strak genoeg speelt heb ik, buiten enkele live versies, nog niet echt gehoord. Aan de andere kant vind ik hem zeker niet zo goed als Maidens voorganger (Clive Burr). Die drumde echt zalig. Lekker strak, technisch goed,...
Wanneer je McBrain live 'Run To The Hills' (de intro) hoort spelen, hoor je duidelijk dat hij het niet perfect kan nadoen (want voor de genen die het nog niet weten : The Number Of The Beast was nog altijd met Clive Burr). En toch blijft McBrain een goede drummer, en Ullrich heeft in één of andere documentaire (NIET SomeKindOfMonster) toegegeven dat hij naar hem opkijkt.

Idd, Peart blijft (één van) de beste. Samen met John Bonham en (imo) Clive Burr. Ook één van mijn persoonlijke favorieten is Clem Burke. Vind hem gewoon zalig spelen. Natuurlijk niet technisch, natuurlijk niet strak. Maar gewoon lekker gedrumd, en het is net alsof ie Thrash Metal speelt. Terwijl hij gewoon de drummer is van Blondie.

Even luisteren naar 'Union City Blue', 'Hanging On The Telephone'...
Daar zitten zalige drum parts in.

Due in stores and online November 17th, the collection will be released on DVD in partnership with Rounder and on CD via Atlantic Records outside of Canada.

Culled from Anthem Entertainment and Zoë Vision’s three other Rush DVD releases – Rush in Rio, R30 & Snakes & Arrows Live - "WORKING MEN" features live recordings of the band's greatest hits as well as one previously unreleased track , "One Little Victory" (see attached track listing).

Bij Rush - A Farewell to Kings (1977):



Klopt mijn kennismaking was dit met RUSH. Helaas vind ik ze nu mindere albums afleveren en gaat Dream Theater het van RUSH winnen...

Op dit album staat wel mijn meest favoriete Rush nummer ooit op. Xanadu, geweldig nummer vind ik dat, vooral de opbouw in het begin vind ik super, en daarna het vervolg. Prachtig episch nummer is dat. Mark Nieuwenboer heeft al eens erg treffend beschreven hoe de opbouw en de rest van dat nummer in elkaar zit. Dat nummer vind ik beter dan het beste nummer van Moving Pictures af.

@Neal Peart: Hoe kun je nou met zo'n user name en dit album op 1 in jouw top 10 nou zoiets zeggen bij nota bene dit album? Komt bij dat ik muziek geen wedstrijd vind. Je geniet er wel of niet van, en je kunt m.i niet zeggen dat Dream Theater het van Rush gaat winnen. Het is ook een compleet andere band dan Rush met ook compleet andere muziek. Dit is meer hardrock, en Dream Theater vind ik toch een stuk harder en meer metal.

Niet ruk, wel totaal anders. De instrumenten beheersing van beide bands staat op een gelijkwaardig niveau vind ik. Maar daarom hoef je er nog niet van te houden. Rush heeft stukken meer sfeer dan Dream Theater, die ik veel klinischer vind klinken en vooral ook kil vind. Rush zijn hele discografie is voor mij wel de moeite waard. Terwijl ik van DT alleen maar Images And Words en Awake goed vind, tenminste aan die 2 van DT heb ik genoeg van hun in huis.

Wat een belachelijke opmerking.
